General Assembly reconvenes for veto session

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019

Today, the General Assembly reconvenes for its annual “veto session,” when lawmakers vote on Governor Northam’s amendments and vetoes of bills that passed during the legislative session earlier this year. The legislators accept or reject the amendments and sustain or override the vetoes.

Some key issues we’re monitoring this year include the Governor’s veto of health care bills expanding access to short-term limited duration and catastrophic health plans, which would lower health coverage standards and result in high out-of-pocket costs and higher premiums for consumers and those in the Affordable Care Act marketplace, and a budget amendment that would end the counterproductive practice of suspending drivers licenses for those unable to pay court debt. We hope that the legislature and the Governor work to serve all Virginians today—including the most vulnerable.

Stay tuned for our legislative wrap-up coming soon.
