WHY IT MATTERS

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides modest financial assistance for elderly and disabled people who are unable to work and lack savings. The monthly federal benefit in 2021 is well below the federal poverty level: $794 for an individual and $1,191 for a couple. Though this is not enough to cover anyone’s basic needs, additional assets over $2,000 disqualify individuals from the program. The program’s rules are so strict that they exclude many of the people the program was created to help.

Congress has a chance to fix SSI and provide critically-needed assistance to help the lowest-income seniors and people with disabilities. Though President Biden pledged during his campaign to update SSI, history tells us that among the competing issues requiring Congressional action, this one rarely makes the cut.
