Wiggins Receives Economic and Social Justice Award

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

Dana Wiggins, who for six years has assisted Virginians who owe money to predatory lenders, will be honored by the National Consumers League with its Florence Kelley Award.

Wiggins is the director of outreach and financial advocacy for the Virginia Poverty Law Center and the responsible lending coordinator for the Virginia Partnership to Encourage Responsible Lending (VaPERL) coalition.

“Through this incredible statewide coalition you have worked to protect low-income consumers from predators in payday lending, car title lending, and predatory mortgage lending practices,” the league’s award letter states.

In addition, the league cites the education Wiggins provides through a predatory loan hotline. She helps callers with debt management and coping with harassing phone calls, undisclosed fees, misuse of personal information and other unscrupulous business practices of predatory lenders.
